Lakay: It Was A Shock To Me Too
DStv Premiership defender of the season Lyle Lakay is still shocked about his return to Cape Town City on the deadline of the transfer window.
Lakay was the first choice left full-back for Masandawana last season. The 31-year-old made 25 league appearances for Mamelodi Sundowns last season.
However, his move to Cape Town City was unexpected to him because he was getting game time at Sundowns despite competing with talented Aubrey Modiba and Sifiso Ngobeni.
"Everybody says this move came as a suprise. It was a shock to me too. One minute I was in JHB and then I was told the next day I must get ready to go to Cape Town. It wasn't my decision at all and City was the club I was told I'm going to" Lakay told Thabiso Mosia on SA FM
"There were no other options offered. I would have liked to stay and fight for my place.I did so when Aubrey came,Ngobeni and others but like I said it wasn't my decision. Maybe things were made easier by the fact that I'm returning to a former club and I've made peace with it.”
The Cape Town born only spoke with co-coach Rulani Mokwena about the club decision to be loaned to another club.
"To be honest I didn't really speak to the coaches. Coach Rulani was the only one I spoke to but there was no real reason. He just said the club is moving in another direction and that was it. So like I said, it wasn't my decision"
The Bafana Bafana international sees the signing of Terrence Mashego not the reason for the club to loan him to another club.
"I also want to be clear that this move wasn't part of the deal with Mashego. If it was the case, it would have been announced at the same time. But this move came days after that announcement of Mashego. So the moves are not linked."
Lakay return to Cape Town City will re-unite him with coach Erick Tinkler and some of the players he left before joining Mamelodi Sundowns.
