Banyana Wins WAFCON For The First Time

Banyana Banyana are Women’s Africa Cup Of Nations champions for the first after beating Morocco 2-1 at Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium-Rabat, Morocco.

Banyana Banyana have lost five previous WAFCON finals since 1995. Tonight victory made South Africa a third country to win Africa Women’s Cup Of Nations after Nigeria and Equatorial Guinea.

Africa Women’s coach of the year Desiree Ellis made three changes to his starting lineup against Morocco.

Morocco dominated the possession in the first half and overloaded their left side which forced Lebohang Ramalepe to get a yellow for a bad tackle.

However, Hildah Magaia had a chance to score for Banyana in the 36th minute, but her attempt was stopped by Morocco goalkeeper after a through pass from Jermaine Seoposenwe.

Eighteen minutes into the second half Hildah Magaia open the scoresheet for Banyana after a cut back from Seoposenwe who managed to beat the Moroccan defender.

A forced change was made by Desiree Ellis few minutes later after South Africa took the lead, with Nomvula Kgoale be replaced by Kholosa Biyana.

Morocco tried to put more numbers up-front in desperation to find the equaliser but it didn’t workout for them after Hildah Magaia get her second goal.

Rosella Ayane goal gave Moroccans hope ten minutes before the end of the match after beating Andile Dlamini on one v one.

South Africa won all six matches they played in the tournament and conceded only three goals during the tournament.

Both teams have already qualified for the 2023 World Cup that’ll be held in Australia and New Zealand.
