Banyana progress to the next stage
Banyana Banyana have reached the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations quarterfinals after winning their second Group C match against Burundi Thursday evening.
Banyana Banyana mentor Desiree Ellis made four changes to the team that beat Nigeria in their opening match on Monday.
Athletico Madrid striker Thembi Kgatlana scored her first goal of the tournament in the 20th minute of the game after a swift counter by Noxolo Cesane.
Burundi didn’t waste time to find the equaliser in the 30th minute Banyana defence didn’t react on time, with Anielle Uwimana finishing from close range.
However, South Africa were back in front just a minute later when Amogelang Masego Motau give the 2018 runners up their lead.
Banyana had another chance to add to the scoreline just before the break when Seoposenwe was brought down inside the box, but she missed the resulting penalty, with Burundi goalkeeper making a save.
Ellis ladies received a second penalty of the match after Kgatlana was fouled by Jeanine Irakoze in the 52nd minute, and it was converted by Linda Matlhalo who came on at halftime to make it 3-1.
Even though Ellis might be disappointed and frustrated with her team not converting some good chances,tonight victory enough for her team to progress to the next stage of the tournament.
