Opportunity to end 14 years of drought.

Mamelodi Sundowns will have the opportunity to end their 14 years MTN 8 title drought when they face Cape Town City on Saturday at Moses Mabhida stadium.

The Mother City won this tournament in 2018 under former coach Benni McCarthy but Sundowns have never lifted the MTN8 trophy in its current guise and their last win was when they beat Orlando Pirates 1-0 in 2007 when the competition was known as the SAA Supa8.

The current champions of South Africa have progressed to the final of the MTN 8 after beating Golden Arrows 4 -1 on aggregate last month. On the other side, Cape Town City they’ve progressed by dismantling Swallows FC 4 – 0.

The two teams have met on 13 occasions since City were formed in 2016 when owner John Comitis purchased the top-flight status of Mpumalanga Black Aces and moved the club to Cape Town. Both teams have six wins each and a single draw in that time, suggesting there is not much to choose between them going into the weekend clash.

However, Mamelodi Sundowns could be without their playmaker Gaston Sirino who missed the CAF Champions League win at the weekend due to illness.

“Gaston missed the previous game with flu, but we expect him to be back. Apart from the Lebo Maboe injury, we don’t have too many other major situations. Mothobi Mvala we still have to assess,” said Rulani Mokwena.

Kick-off for the match starts at 18:00.
